Samantha Bee Mocks the Rebranded “Fox Nation” and It Is Good [VIDEO]

Samantha doesn’t mention it in this bit, but for years “Fox Nation” was the absolute bottom of the Fox News cesspool, full of conspiracy theories, invented anti-liberal stories, and thousands of blatantly racist cavemen in the comment sections.

Get to know our expanding state media, um, we mean, Fox News’s newest endeavor: Fox Nation.

On a search for “People” named Adrian Smith, mine comes up thirteenth on the list, after a wine and TV columnist on Amazon Prime, a Webcam model, a writer, and Iron Maiden.

My congressman doesn’t seem to be very important in the Twitterverse.

Ayep. One of the things that men like Hitler raged against was efforts by the Weimar gov’t to prevent groups like theirs from “speaking their minds,” silencing hate groups like the Nazi Party for the sake of “peace” when all they were doing was promoting the “truth” about the situation in interwar Germany.

You might want a screen shot of the stupidest climate denial argument of all time, cuz Steve Milloy might take it down once he learns the surface temperature of Venus is over 800 degrees F.

not the existence of the plant
the future of the planet

no one’s saying the earth would ‘disappear’
the people, the animal life, the plant life - what would happen to all that?

oh, and btw, is there any plant or animal life on venus?

asinine

My wife and I went last night to the Mexican restaurant in the county seat. (When we walk in, they normally turn off the television which plays FOX but leave on the one set to Mexican television.)

Interestingly, when we walked in, we were the only customers, and the television was set to MSNBC. I’m not sure Lawrence O’Donnell is good for the digestion though.

Pro-Life Party Shrugs Off Death Of 7-Year-Old Girl (Goes to Wonkette)

We all know that Republicans are, generally speaking, heartless monsters who don’t care about anyone but themselves, but you’d naively hope multiple airings of It’s a Wonderful Life combined with the tragic death of a seven-year-old girl might cause their hearts to grow three sizes at least.

Not so much! Because the little girl wasn’t a fetus competing with a woman’s autonomy and was also a Guatemalan migrant who died in the custody of US Border Control. Republicans have since turned up on our TVs telling us why the death of Jackeline Caal was entirely her own fault.

Jason Chaffetz appeared on Fox News last night to inform its sociopathic viewers of the true “message” of Caal’s death, which is that a seven-year-old girl should not have chosen to “make this journey” to America with her parents. Chaffetz also probably believes that Tiny Tim shouldn’t have chosen a dead-ass broke father. What was he thinking?

two comments:

If you’re waiting for people to Google why they should embrace your civil rights or other cause, then you’re going to lose. Successful advocacy is part in-your-face pressure and part marketing/salesmanship. It’s not your target’s job to just accept that you’re right.

this is just plain wrong.
no one needs to ‘embrace’ my civil rights
they are mine
everyone has these rights.
what is true is that in some cases they are deliberately suppressed by ‘the state’ who also doesnt discourage their suppression in the workplace and public square

the rest of society’s job is to recognize and respect all my civil rights exactly the same way i am required to respect theirs

“liberty and justice for all” means all or it means nothing

w/r/t to ‘deadnaming’ (a term i just learned) - people change their names for all kinds of reasons. sometimes legally, sometimes more informally.
imo you call people by their name regardless of the reason for the change carries more weight than focusing on any specific reason why someone changed

As already noted, the planet doesn’t give a flying fuck if its a hospitable garden planet or a pollutant-choked ball of radioactive cinder and ash. But we do because humans as a species can only exist in a narrow band of environmental conditions. Our ability to adapt our environment to suit our needs is limited, and once the environment breaks down entirely, our days on this planet are numbered. But the Earth will continue on, it will clean itself up and perhaps one day support life again. And it won’t give a flying fuck that we’re gone.

Hannity and BillO commiserate about being “emotionally” hurt by “accusations” against them.

- no one has an inherent right to not be accused
- no one has an inherent right to not be falsely accused
- if you are maliciously or frivolously accused, there are remedies
- otherwise you defend yourself
- like the rest of us

- after accusal - you have rights to recourse if the accusation was abusive

On Thursday night, Tucker Carlson did what Tucker Carlson always does and repackaged some neo-Nazi talking points for all his viewers at home. This time, however, some people besides those of us whose job it is to go “Hey! Look at this Nazi thing Tucker Carlson said!” all the time, caught on, and now he’s lost another advertiser. Poor Tucker!

Pacific Life, an insurance company, has pulled it’s advertisement’s from Carlson’s show following an extra gross rant he went on about how immigrants make the country “dirtier.”

“We have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer, and dirtier, and more divided.

Immigration is a form of atonement. Previous leaders of our country committed sins ― we must pay for those sins by welcoming an endless chain of migrant caravans. That’s the argument they make.”

re: #78 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

…WHY?!?!

I grok this. I lived these times, embedded in the context. This feels right to me, although I not the author.

“Basically, the song only makes sense in the context of a society in which women are expected to reject men’s advances whether they actually want to or not, and therefore it’s normal and expected for a lady’s gentleman companion to pressure her despite her protests, because he knows she would have to say that whether or not she meant it, and if she really wants to stay she won’t be able to justify doing so unless he offers her an excuse other than “I’m staying because I want to.” (That’s the main theme of the man’s lines in the song, suggesting excuses she can use when people ask later why she spent the night at his house: it was so cold out, there were no cabs available, he simply insisted because he was concerned about my safety in such awful weather, it was perfectly innocent and definitely not about sex at all!)

In this particular case, he’s pretty clearly right, because the woman has a voice, and she’s using it to give all the culturally-understood signals that she actually does want to stay but can’t say so. She states explicitly that she’s resisting because she’s supposed to, not because she wants to: “I ought to say no no no…” She states explicitly that she’s just putting up a token resistance so she’ll be able to claim later that she did what’s expected of a decent woman in this situation: “at least I’m gonna say that I tried.” And at the end of the song they’re singing together, in harmony, because they’re both on the same page and they have been all along.

So it’s not actually a song about rape - in fact it’s a song about a woman finding a way to exercise sexual agency in a patriarchal society designed to stop her from doing so. But it’s also, at the same time, one of the best illustrations of rape culture that pop culture has ever produced. It’s a song about a society where women aren’t allowed to say yes…which happens to mean it’s also a society where women don’t have a clear and unambiguous way to say no.”

Even if we clawed all of the CO2 out of the atmosphere, in 500 million to a billion years Earth will go the way of Venus, as the Sun’s luminosity continues to increase, making it energetically favorable for CO2 to come out of limestone instead of atmospheric CO2 going into it, and leading to thermal runaway. So when you read that the Sun has 5 billion years left on the Main Sequence: True but irrelevant as far as life on Earth is concerned.

In the meantime, we should be trying to find ways to do all we can to reverse the damage we’ve done before we get a billion years ahead of ourselves.

Just to put those percentages into perspective:

CO2 is an asphyxiant gas and not classified as toxic or harmful in accordance with Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals standards of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe by using the OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals. In concentrations up to 1% (10,000 ppm), it will make some people feel drowsy and give the lungs a stuffy feeling. Concentrations of 7% to 10% (70,000 to 100,000 ppm) may cause suffocation, even in the presence of sufficient oxygen, manifesting as dizziness, headache, visual and hearing dysfunction, and unconsciousness within a few minutes to an hour. The physiological effects of acute carbon dioxide exposure are grouped together under the term hypercapnia, a subset of asphyxiation.
[…]
There are few studies of the health effects of long-term continuous CO2 exposure on humans and animals at levels below 1%. Occupational CO2 exposure limits have been set in the United States at 0.5% (5000 ppm) for an eight-hour period. At this CO2 concentration, International Space Station crew experienced headaches, lethargy, mental slowness, emotional irritation, and sleep disruption. Studies in animals at 0.5% CO2 have demonstrated kidney calcification and bone loss after eight weeks of exposure. A study of humans exposed in 2.5 hour sessions demonstrated significant effects on cognitive abilities at concentrations as low as 0.1% (1000ppm) CO2 likely due to CO2 induced increases in cerebral blood flow. Another study observed a decline in basic activity level and information usage at 1000 ppm, when compared to 500 ppm.

Yeah, you read right. Current CO2 levels are at half of what research clearly suggests has a detrimental effect on human cognition…

That’s alright, I just saw an NPR report earlier whose argument was “Yeah, all this Cohen business is really damaging to Trump and is totally felonious, but it’s not ‘collusion’ and so Trump could claim the whole things political!”

That’s what they’re setting up for, preparing to argue that unless Mueller puts Trump and Putin in the same room, mugging for a picture while holding a folder labeled “Plans to steal the presidency!” on it in full view, then the whole investigation is a failure and Trump comes out looking “vindicated.”

“…While the photograph is legitimate, it is unclear exactly who wrote the numbers on these people’s arms, with Yahoo reporting that:

According to various advocates and others who observed the situation on the bridges over the summer, it was volunteers with the Mexican Red Cross who first created a waiting list to help maintain order within the encampments as asylum seekers waited for their turn to cross. The list was then transferred to the Casa del Migrante along with the asylum seekers when they were forced to move there in November. Accounts vary on when, exactly, and with whom the practice of tracking migrants with numbers on their arms originated, but it has now become a part of the process for all who wish to seek asylum at one of the U.S. ports of entry in El Paso.

Charles, I have an idea for you, based on something they do in Duolingo (which I wish they would do more of): Allow us to “spend” karma to “buy stuff” for the site. At duolingo, you can spend points you earn on an outfit for the little avatar, buy extra lessons, and things that allow you to keep streaks alive if you’re not able to make one lesson.

What if we could spend karma on things like having a background image, changing the color of our comments or those of others, and other related things?

It’s funny, though. In the 1990’s, politicians were expected to be stiff and formal, the spitting image of the board-like Mitt Romney that we mocked just a few short years ago. I mean, hell, people made fun of Bill Clinton because he was a jazz musician and a popular man who appealed to baser instincts. Nowadays, it seems unfathomable that we would vote for someone who holds himself or herself in that kind of rigor, like a freaking political robot. Amazing how the times change.

The thing is, I can’t agree. She may be attractive to some, but she shouldn’t rely on that as her sole draw when she is trying to find her place in the world. I, for one, do not find her attractive, and while my opinion means nothing as an already-married older man, the fact is that a young woman such as herself should not be trying to use her looks to make her mark. I agree that she’s a f..ing moron; but she is empty inside and is desperately trying to find people who would accept her. It was her ignorance that allowed her to be seduced by the gun cult; she needs someone to help her come to her senses. An acquaintance who lost his wife similarly was inducted into this cult; it provided him a community of support and friends after his loss; everything is now seen through the prism of gun madness.

She chose a dark path after she got her bachelor’s degree, her moronic choices are playing out on Twitter, she’s gotten hundreds of replies today suggesting she go into porn.
